STRIKING PLAY BY LADIES AND MENS HOCKEY TEAMS

The IIE Varsity College Ladies team put in a flawless performance at the recent University Sports South Africa (USSA) Hockey Championship as they beat UCT in the final match 4-1 qualifying for the A section 2018. They dominated their games against Rhodes, Durban University of Technology and Central University of Technology.
Said Donna Small (IIE BA Honours Durban North): “Winning the B section this year was our quarter finals and met Maties again in the 5th and 6th playoff match. Maties stepped up to the plate during this match and beat the IIE Varsity College 5-2. The team finished 6th in the A section.
Said goalkeeper Richard Curtis (IIE BCom Honours Durban North): “Beating Maties showed that we cgoal. We constantly reminded ourselves what we were working towards. To win felt incredible because we had all bought into what we wanted to achieve. I definitely believe this team deserves to play in the A section at USSA next year. They are a fabulous group of girls who play a competitive brand of hockey – I might have to register for another year at IIE Varsity College.”

The IIE Varsity College men’s hockey team were in the pool of death and lost their first two games to UJ and WITS. However, in possibly the upset of this stage of the tournament, they beat Maties, the 2016 USSA men’s hockey title holders, 2-0. The team sailed through the an compete against other top Universities in the country. This proud achievement illustrated how much we, as a team, have developed and that the IIE Varsity College is on the right track and its structures are in place. I am really proud to end my IIE Varsity College USSA career having achieved great things, and having taken the IIE Varsity College team from the C section in 2013 to the A section in 2017.”
